Cataclysm Information and Discussion

garreth's picture

garreth — Fri, 08/21/2009 - 13:30

Here it is, folks: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/cataclysm/

Let's use this as a unified place to discuss what is likely to be the most disruptive expansion yet!

Yes, I'm rolling a Worgen. No, I'm not a Furry.

New lore info:

saedo — Mon, 09/28/2009 - 11:34

New lore info:  http://www.wow.com/2009/09/27/cataclysm-starting-zone-lore-and-other-new...

  • Garrosh Hellscream has been confirmed as the new Warchief for the Horde.
  • Garrosh has rebuilt Orgrimmar and has kicked all but the orcs and tauren out of the city proper, due to feeling the other races aren't "strong enough" to protect Orgrimmar.
  • The worgen experience starts in a flashback to before the citizens of Gilneas were overcome by the curse.
  • As a goblin you start off on Kezan as a rich executive. Things start to fall apart and you give your life savings to a Trade Prince, who uses you as a slave until the ship wrecks.
  • Kezan is described as a city rife with pollution with a Grand Theft Auto type of parody.
  • The goblins reshape Azshara to look like the Horde symbol.
  • Lordaeron is being expanded with a pit that will open up into Undercity.
  • Stranglethorn Vale is one of the zones receiving the most extensive makeovers.
  • Southshore is destroyed by tidal waves; it's not taken over by the Horde as was suggested at BlizzCon.
  • The raids in at launch will be "like Naxxramas, rather than Sartharion." Whatever that means... probably in terms of number of bosses.

Question

Kwondre — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 11:25

What circumstances could cause the game to be over?

What is the true "end-game"? Or does it just go on forever and ever?

+ points for lore-based answers

When it's no longer

saedo — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 11:35

When it's no longer profitable.

Though lore wise, the true end game is probably has to be Sargaras himself.    Not some broken wandering soul version of him.    Full power, Titan body and armies of the Burning Legion with him.

At that point, we'd likely have to be joining forces with the Titans themselves.   The Pantheon, and Aman'Thul will be requesting our aid!     It likely can't take place on Azeroth itself.    Probably invading their strongholds in the Twisting Nether itself to take him out once and for all.

Sargeras the Realm Wiper? I

Kwondre — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 12:06

Sargeras the Realm Wiper?

I always thought Arthas would be the end-game, but that's just the nub in me I suppose. Functionality and gameplay wise, I'm excited about cataclysm...but lore wise, does anyone else find it a let-down that the main end-boss is for all intents and purposes a ressurected "old" boss from a previous encounter? Classic was merely a setback?

BTW, The Battle of Gilneas seems like an AWESOME BG if it is what I think it will be, that is a combination of WoW and Call of Duty/other FPS games where you're trekking in and out of buildings and cover shooting/fighting in close quarters - setting up ambushes and what not.

We never faced Deathwing

saedo — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 12:25

We never faced Deathwing before.   Only the rumors of his possible death or imprisonment and then later confirmations that he's been planning something in the backgrounds.

We defeated his son and daughter, Nefarion and Onyxia.   And they're both making a comeback.    Along with Ragnaros.   And Vancleef and Arugal for that matter! lol

P.S.   In some speculation I did months ago (before 3.1 was revealed) /node/5520  I did think of a possiblity with Deathwing as an expansion.  I thought he'd change Azeroth's map somehow, but Blizz is doing it far beyond what I considered  lol     Also, I seemed to also have half-jokingly said Ragnaros would return (though in another manner).

Agoney — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 13:38

Yeah man, I honestly wanted to face deathwing since the whole BWL area... normally I don't like how blizzard may or may not reuse old content/ideas, but I like how they're going to completely change/reconfigure the old lands from classic. Thoses places are so dead, unless your ganking or power leveling you have little reason to even return to those lands (not talking about the major cities of course).

Agoney — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 13:41

I'm also happy they're finally doing something with grim batol.. I dont know much about lore but was always mad there was this giant area of the map and it was unused.

saedo — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 13:54

It used to be the home of the Wildhammer Dwarves.   But after their civil war, the place was tainted with evil so they packed up and moved north to Aerie Peak.

Later, it became where Deathwing got the orcs to use the Demon Soul to imprison/enslave Alextrazsa (red dragon queen) to breed red dragons for orc use.   And allowing Deathwing to steal some eggs for his own purposes (brought to Outland and became the Netherwing).

After a rag tag group of heroes rescued her and all and destroyed the Demon Soul.   Alextrazsa, Malygos, Nozdormu, and Ysera teamed up to take Deathwing down.

After that, no one knew what happened.     Only that the Red Dragons are keeping a close watch on the place.   Rumors that Deathwing could be imprisoned in there.

Well, this now we know Deathwing made it a base for the Twilight Hammer, and get to go bust up that place!

"With the release of the novel Night of the Dragon, following that of WotLK, it was confirmed that Deathwing resides within the deepest chasms of Grim Batol, continuing his experiments on a new brood to replace his black dragonflight, dubbed "twilight" dragons.

The proximity of the expansion's and novel's release dates, combined with the presence of twilight drakes in Obsidian Sanctum, likely foreshadows Grim Batol being launched during the WotLK expansion as a raid instance--falling into WoW's current plot (Krasus, Earthen, Rhonin) quite nicely."

The end boss is NELTHARION.

Shihli — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 12:23

The end boss is NELTHARION.  Deathwing.

His son is NEFARIAN.  Whom we have fought before.

There is a difference.

That said, Arthas is a chump created by a lieutenant of the Burning Legion.  Sargeras is definitely more powerful.  Arthas is only so popular because he's basically Sephiroth:

Whats funny saedo, is that

Ewiges — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 13:13

Whats funny saedo, is that since BC was announced I posted in the suggestion forums that a remake of Azeroth should be done. Flying mounts, open up the closed areas, ir greyman wall, then stuff like westfall being taken back from Defias.

Whats cool is this is finally being done and is making me more excited than any of the expansions yet.

As far as the leaked info, my friend, Q&A at blizz was saying blizzard was actually hacked and datamined for information. Not sure if the information were conference notes or what. But leaked employee information can be true too, except all that information from one person would have to be someone high up.

What I'm still wondering, since that leaked information was so accurate, if the stuff not mentioned is/was planned. It seems to me that the expansion is still really early in developement from what was shown at Blizzcon.

Torvo's picture

I was at that panel...

Torvo — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 16:24

They weren't "hacked", they pre-released information in patches and weren't too shy about saying it was possible to datamine it. They went on to praise the people who figured out how for how smart and dedicated they were and explained how it was done.

I guess you could say it's hacking, but if Blizz wasn't thinking of it that way I'm not sure I would either.

saedo's picture

Maybe.   It could be all

saedo — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 13:16

Maybe.   It could be all drawing board stuff that someone found.    Like the Undermine / Kezan has been on drawing boards before Vanilla WoW was even released.    All mmo has said about their releases were they're from "inside sources".

Here's the offical blue

Here's the offical blue summary of Blizzcon's System Panel:  http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=19377972716&sid=1

Rated Battlegrounds
This section discussed changes being made to Battlegrounds. We realize that players want a bit more out of the Battlegrounds, or don’t necessarily want to actively participate in Arenas to acquire some of the best gear in the game. We’re changing this by providing an alternate method to acquiring Arena rating. We’ve introduced rated Battlegrounds, which will allow players to acquire rating for very powerful gear without setting foot into an Arena, so each player can enjoy whichever PvP activity he or she prefers.

We plan to include featured weekly Battlegrounds for players to enjoy; coupled with the changes made, this will help keeps the gameplay changing from week to week.

The way the new rated Battlegrounds work is pretty straightforward. The more games you win, the higher the rating you acquire; however, we do not plan to punish players for losing. We’re looking at setting a cap of six or more battles per week. We want players to enjoy the ability to acquire rating through Battlegrounds, but it shouldn’t become the main source of rating gains.

In order to participate in rated Battlegrounds, players will be required to join battles as full groups. However these groups do not need to be committed teams as in the Arena system; rather, the group simply needs to have the required amount of players for whichever Battleground they’re entering. As an example, one would need to join the queue as a group for Warsong Gulch with any nine additional players to qualify for a rating.

Tol Barad
We're also adding a new zone that combines elements of Wintergrasp with the Isle of Quel'danas. During PvP battles, players will fight to take control points across the island. In between PvP battles, the zone serves as a daily quest hub for both factions, while the winning faction will have access to a raid area.

Guild Advancement
We continued with the presentation discussing exciting new features that will provide guilds with avenues to further advance, both on an individual basis and as a whole that culminates into a more immersive level of guild development. With these upcoming guild advancement features, guilds will be able to acquire talents and provide guild members with leveling benefits, as well as acquire guild achievements, guild professions, and other cool features.

Guild Leveling and Talents
We’ve introduced a new guild feature that will provide options for players to earn guild experience in a variety of ways. Players can earn guild experience through leveling, reputation ranks, boss kills, Battleground and Arena wins, and profession ranks. The top twenty earners from the guild per day will contribute to the guild experience total.

With every acquired level, guilds will receive talent points that they can then spend towards their guild talent tree, which affects all guild members in the guild.

Additionally, guild experience is converted into guild currency that can be used to purchase a wide variety of rewards, such as guild profession plans and reagents, vanity items, and talent respecs.

Guild Professions
Guilds that use guild currency to purchase profession plans will be able to share any purchased plan with the rest of the guild via a vendor and skill trainer. Guilds are also able to create guild heirlooms; these items bind to the guild so that anyone in the guild will be able to acquire them. Just like the normal heirloom items, guild heirloom items will also scale with level and will support all armor and weapons.

Guild members will also be able to take advantage of being able to create guild-specific versions of items that require fewer or different reagents. The new reagents are purchased from guild vendors via guild currency, and there will be support for all professions.

Looking for Guild
With the Looking for Guild feature, we’re making it easier for players to find a guild. We’re also looking to provide guild leaders more options to make it easier to recruit new members. The new tool will provide filters based on various requirements and will have a simple and easy-to-use interface.

Guild Achievements
Players can earn achievements as a guild, with each requiring a minimum ratio of guild members to complete. We’ve also introduced new achievements that guilds can partake in. One example is becoming Grand Master in all professions.

Features
Guilds will receive a special guild news-feed that will show them updates on happenings within the guild such as achievements, boss kills, etc. Guilds will also have access to profession info for their members and more. In addition to these features, guilds will also be able to acquire a percentage of gold looted on boss kills that will go directly to the guild bank. Additionally, guilds will be able to invite other guilds to events.

Mastery
This segment of the panel discussed a new and exciting feature called Mastery. With this feature, we want to make class talent trees simple throughout, but we also want to make them a lot more fun. We feel that while talent trees are pretty cool, they’re becoming larger and more complicated. We see this by the talents available, as many talents try to perform three different things and passive bonuses compete against fun or utility talents.

So while we will add some new talents for Cataclysm, we also want to prune passive and mandatory talents so that you have more points available for fun or utility talents. Our goal is to have talent trees that are simpler, less cookie-cutter and more fun. Under the new plan, you’ll get passive bonuses just for spending points in the appropriate tree.

Passive bonuses are things that increase stats such as damage, healing, and tanking, as well as stat-like attributes such as haste or crit. We really want to give something unique for your spec -- and the Mastery stat incorporates this.

An example of a passive bonus for Assassination rogues would be increased poison damage the more points they spend in Assassination. Likewise, a rogue specialized in Subtlety will receive an energy cost bonus, Beastmaster hunters would receive bonuses to their pet’s damage output, and Marksmanship hunters would receive focus regeneration bonuses, as well. These are just some examples of how passive bonuses bolster each spec of every class.

Path of the Titans
Path of the Titans is another great new feature we covered that encompasses rewarding progression at max level. This new feature implements a third new type of glyph called “Ancient Glyph,” and as you can see, it is themed after the titans. These special glyphs are not associated with the Inscription tradeskill, and are also not specific to any class.

You’re able to unlock a path and progress within that path as you continuously engage in different aspects of the game. As you advance, you will be able to unlock special glyph sockets for your character. You can also respec your path at any time, in case you decide to change your path.

You earn these ancient glyphs by using the new Archaeology secondary profession to recover and trade in titan artifacts. Each path will have 2-3 choices per rank, and again, you can respec if you decide to go down another path.
• Path of Aman’Thul, the High Father
• Path of Eonar, the Lifebinder
• Path of Norgannon, the Dreamweaver
• Path of Khaz’Goroth, the Shaper
• Path of Aggramar, the Avenger
• Path of Golganneth, the Thunderer

You can earn progress down any of these paths by doing things such as questing, raiding, PvP, trade skills, etc., with a possible weekly cap for maximum progress. Over time, you’ll be able to unlock new ancient glyphs that will greatly benefit your character.

This new system will be accessible to all players at max level. Players will eventually be able to reach new ranks for ancient glyphs, encouraging them to further develop their characters. There is also a possibility that we will introduce whole new paths in future content patches.

That’s it for this year’s Systems panel. See you next BlizzCon!

 "Guild Achievements  Players

 "Guild Achievements

See that magic word, "ratio". This is why I kick all the stupid, unplayed, level 20 alts. Though they'll probably make it "level 80 only characters contribute to guild ranking". Either way, I just like kicking alts.

saedo's picture

The ratio is 75% for Boss

saedo — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 13:13

The ratio is 75% for Boss Kill achievements.    You get a guild achievement for that if 75% of the raid members that made the kill are in your guild.

For the Grand Master in professions, I believe they said you only need 1 of each to get that, not a ratio of the guild.

Will have to see what other achievements there are.

Vitriola's picture

75% for guild achievements?

Vitriola — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 14:29

How do alts figure into that?

Jayel's picture

I would guess that means if

Jayel — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 14:36

I would guess that means if your alt is not in Downfall then it wont count towards the 75%.  Might have to get my DK into the guild when this goes live and kick out some of the other guys I dont play so much.

saedo's picture

No.   It means, if you're in

saedo — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 14:39

No.   It means, if you're in a raid that kills a boss.   If that particular raid has at least 75% belonging to the same guild.    The rest can be pugs, apps, or whatever.     Then that guild gets credit for that kill.    You know, the achievement spam, "Downfall has earned the achievement [Death to Deathwing]", and all that jazz, and whatever guild experience points we earn.

It's not 75% of the entire guild must kill a boss before we get credit.

Jayel's picture

This is what I was trying to

Jayel — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 14:49

This is what I was trying to say in just 1 sentence but I guess I failed =P

a 10 man that has 6 guilded people from DF and then 4 other DF alts that dont have the DF tag (or any 4 pugs) would lead to this run not being counted towards the achievement.  (This is how I understand it to work)

saedo's picture

Oh yea that would be right.

saedo — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 15:15

Oh yea that would be right.  10 mans would need 8 guildies with the same guild tag.    25 mans would need 19 guildies with the same guild tag.   For it all to count

ahhhh

Ewiges — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 11:15

Gnomeragon retaken: I saw this in the leaked info from the dataminers. That info is like 99% accurate, but I did not hear this at Blizzcon. Does anyone have an official on that?

Torvo's picture

I was at a panel where someone asked about Gnomer

Torvo — Mon, 08/24/2009 - 17:52

They didn't say anything formally or officially, just that they might have something planned for Gnomer in the future. Without the big wink-wink at the end that his voice was dripping with.

It wasn't datamined either (can't datamine an expansion that's not been built to release yet).   It was an inside source providing all the info.
