Figure Out The Quality Of Your Connection
garreth — Tue, 11/17/2009 - 18:18
This is something that has plagued us, as a guild, for a very long time: shitty internet connections from our ISP (internet service providers) to the Gorgonnash WoW server (which resides, physically, in Dallas, Texas). There are a lot of things that cause shitty internet connections: spammy addons, malware on our computers, your little brother torrenting porn, etc.
However, we haven't really been able to gauge what exactly "shitty" means. Well, here's something visual and easy to understand:
Go, try it now and post your results here (via the "Direct Link" button they give you, using the little "Tree" button on the site text editor). This will give us a starting area to diagnose your shitty internet problems. Ensure that you choose the DALLAS, TX server on the map when given the choice. As an example, I have a "B" rating:

Let's see what you guys got.
edit: updated with my actual score without 1.5mb/s of torrents running :P
edit 2: For those of you whom don't know, every single raider should run this:

It's a simple, easy and safe way to lower WoW latency and possibly improve your performance.
For those of you that wanted to use QoS (quality of service) on their routers, here are my settings (click, then click "original" to see 1:1 size):

Mashedtater — Sat, 12/26/2009 - 21:53If you have upgraded to windows 7 and are getting disconnected in such a way that requires you to reset you local area connection, download the vista driver for your nic. This happens on the nforce hardware like the 780i. So far the vista drivers are working for me, but I'm still doing stress testing.
there we go

Knoppix (not verified) — Sun, 11/29/2009 - 11:54I love the different ping results given by the two different programs written by the same company, although one server is Ookla hosted and the other is Speakeasy.

For people with chain disconnect issues...
Kwondre — Tue, 11/24/2009 - 07:30Found this post referred to many times by several Anub strat guides...one of the fixes is the latency hack...but there are a couple of minor other ones that could help for people who DC when lots are going on in game...

Ewiges — Thu, 11/19/2009 - 16:01I noticed some people have an asterix by their grade "B*" what does this mean, I haven't seen it brought up in this thread. I also think its funny how every ISP is rated crappy. I guess people only rate them when they are upset.
Also, I've done a shit load of work with ports to keep my packet loss at a mininum due to competitive play in FPS. If anyone need any help with that send me a tell and if you're on a router I'm familair with I can walk ya through it. Also, don't we have like 42 people in IT that raid and should have everyone at 0 packet loss?

Whats interesting is there were done with multiple webpages open including the horrible farmville, and I also had two online game open, but not in an actual game so packets are minimal. You really only see this at my low (compared to usual) upload speed.
