need tech help
forshurley — Thu, 11/19/2009 - 23:34
so some of you might of noticed i havent been on for raids. i wanted to make a formal post about my connection problem because i will not be able to raid until it is resolved. i tried a number of things to help with my connection issues. i have tried antivirus, deleted all addons, deleting my wtf wow folder, called and bitched out time warner, replaced modem and even had a timer warner tech come out with no luck of a better connection. i feel like i have a good system .
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
what i feel is the problem is every time my ip address changes i lose my internet. so i am not sure if my mac is
messed up for not acquiring the dynamic ip fast enough or if its time warners for changing there ip like every 15min. so i guess what i am asking for is help. does anyone else have a mac? has anyone heard of problems like this before? if this happened on you pc what would you do? could it be hardware issue vs software issue? i am just out of ideas and feel like i have done everything to make my connection good. almost to the point of getting a static ip lol( but i wont because of cost issues).

Have you tried replacing the
Ardea — Tue, 11/24/2009 - 11:54Have you tried replacing the cable line that connects your modem to the cable box outside?
Usually when the cable techs come they redo the cable connectors - get new coaxial cable and go straight from the outside (the connector that your house is plugged into) to your modem then a direct link to your Computer. This will eliminate the wires inside the wall as a variable. I had a very similiar problem and it turned out that I needed to rewire my house.
To test if this is a problem with the computer: Connect multiple computers up to the router (have a LAN party) if only the one computer disconnects and the others are fine then chances are it is the computer... otherwise it would be the router, modem, house wiring, or the connecton to the house (Cable company).
We can assume the problem isn't the router because that is a new variable... I did not see if you bought a new modem (I bought 3 trying to troubleshoot my problem)... that would leave the wiring in the house and the cable company.
Do they really change your IP address every 15 mins on purpose? I bet if you yell enough they can change that. See if another cable company can cover your area if they are unwilling to change... most places cable companies still have a monopoly. Cox claimed they randomly change IPs but I have had the same IP for 3 years.
That's how I would troubleshoot your connectivity.... Good Luck!!!
Hmmm
Katibug — Mon, 11/23/2009 - 15:00How old is your iMac? Are you covered under applecare? Have you called apple/applecare with your issue? This could be a problem with the airport w/in the mac, not your home internet. Is it only when you are wired or both wired/wireless?
If you have applecare, and/or it's still under the warranty you could always just take it to a local apple store and speak with one of their mac genious guys. Bring it in, connect it to the internet and see if it's your home internet or something internally on the logic board. Stress test it etc etc.
One important thing to remember is that you can't just take it in to an apple store, you have to schedule an appointment online. usually it's a 3 day way and if you go waltzing in, you're just going to be told you need to make an appointment.
That's what I would do based on your list of problems.
my mac is about 3 years old
forshurley — Mon, 11/23/2009 - 21:08my mac is about 3 years old and not under warranty. the warranty expired about 3 months ago and went in there before it was up and got a new hard drive and mother board. so i dont think its a hard ware issue. i need to back up my 80 g of music and just to a clean reinstall of everything but not looking forward to that.
Hard drive and motherboard
Shihli — Mon, 11/23/2009 - 22:05Hard drive and motherboard aren't the same as your network card, which I suspect is the problem
I would be very surprised if
starstalker — Tue, 11/24/2009 - 01:35I would be very surprised if the network was not on-board.
Forsurely, why did they replace the motherboard?
my video card is integrated
forshurley — Wed, 11/25/2009 - 15:57my video card is integrated into the mother board and complained about my video card and they had to replace the mother board to replace the video card.
You're right Star, the
Katibug — Tue, 11/24/2009 - 16:33You're right Star, the motherboard is called a "logic board" and is pretty much all-inclusive when it comes to stuff on the computer. With Mac's, the only things you can really upgrade are hard drives and RAM, which tells me everything else is built into the logic board.
Why DID they replace the logic board?
i got a new router and still
forshurley — Mon, 11/23/2009 - 11:45i got a new router and still have the same disconnecting issues.
If your modem is getting a
Dufe — Tue, 11/24/2009 - 07:17If your modem is getting a new DHCP IP address every 15 minutes, and that didn't change with a router, then there is something terribly wrong with your ISP, your modem (though you replaced that already), or the connection itself. Getting a new IP is going to interrupt your internet no matter how many components on your computer get replaced or how many times you re-install the OS - that's just a fact of life with TCP/IP. Can you tell us about how you know that you're getting a new IP so often?
Does it only happen in
Agoney — Mon, 11/23/2009 - 14:41Does it only happen in WoW?
Run a trace route from your computer to 63.241.255.84 **note (This isn't a valid address, since 255 is reserved for broadcast, I'm not sure why WoW wiki has it listed. I'm not home to do a netstat /b but maybe someone can help you with that! This should take you to the dallas data center though). Are any of the hops timing out, or have a large response time? Your last hop should be 63.241.193.22 (least, thats what mine is) so anything after that will/should time out. Here is my sample output

Agoney — Fri, 11/20/2009 - 07:07Yeah, if you dont have a router in place... get one ASAP. That being said, my IP hasn't changed in months from road runner (well, my parents and my friends, ive moved 3 times so it has for that reason). The DHCP is set for a 23 hour time out but for various reasons we get the same number.
