My 'toon name means . . .
Boann — Thu, 04/08/2010 - 23:11
I've had a few people ask me about my 'toon so I thought I'd just throw a post up with some quick information. I ganked this straing from this site.
Boann in Myth
There are a couple of variations on the myth of the goddess Boann, but one element tends to remain the same - she was the wife of Nechtan, a god of the water. Likewise, Boann was herself a water-goddess, and one of her myths concerns the water. According to legend, there was a sacred well (Sidhe Nechtan) that contained the source of knowledge. All were forbidden to approach this well, with the exception of the god Nechtan (as was noted, Boann's husband) and his servants. Boann ignored the warnings, and strode up to the sacred well, thus violating the sanctity of the area. For this act, she was punished, and the waters of the defiled well swelled and were transformed into a raging river, a river that pursued her. In some versions, she was drowned; while in others, she managed to outrun the currents. In either case, this water became the river that was known henceforth as the Boyne, and Boann thereafter became the presiding deity.
Another aspect of the myth of Boann is that she bore Oenghus. She and the leader of the Tuatha De Danaan, the Dagdha, engaged in an illicit affair that resulted in the birth of this god of love. However, since both Boann and the Dagdha wished to keep their rendezvous a secret, they used their divine powers to cause the nine month gestation period to last but a single day - or so it seemed, for the sun was frozen in the sky for those nine months, never setting and never rising. On this magical day, Oenghus emerged into the world.
So yeah, I named my 'toon after a Celtic Goddess of water who has an interesting back story. :-D

Well, when i first started
Agoney — Mon, 04/19/2010 - 13:33Well, when i first started playing, I made two characters. One a rogue, one a mage. My mages name was Estranged. It just sounded good, no personal meaning really.. My rogue's name, was of course, Agony. It just seemed like the perfect name. Unfortunately, Warsong was littered with problems/bugs etc, and for some reason I was forced to rename, so I chose Agoney.
Well, it was me and a bunch of RL friends who started playing this game, but after while we had some different goals. Some of us went and transferred of "brusong", many joining the guild Drama. Some of us stayed in NoX, and others quit (like sabon). However Sabon eventually came back and rolled on gorg with a bunch of our other friends. I made my priest just to "hang" out and dick around during my non-raid time. Priest of course was named Antiquite... (supposed to be named Antiquity but in my haste i mispelled it, like everything else!) Just another cool sounding name.
After I xferred to raid with Sabon and the older guys here, everyone knew me as either Agoney or Ag. I started playing my priest in TBC, and everyone still referred to me as ag. When i came back from this summer break, I name changed my priest to Ag.. just to make things easier.. Plus 2 letter names rock.
2 letters do rock!
Boann — Mon, 04/19/2010 - 17:41You're right, two letter names do rock. I can't think of any right now, but I'll roll with it. And Rouges are always causing me agony so I have to agree that it's a good name for one.
I first made a priest back
Badpriestess — Mon, 04/19/2010 - 04:13I first made a priest back when I started wow 5 years ago which I forget its name I was in westfall and asked to heal Deadmines and I said dorry I am shadow I dont heal, this not knowing back then and only having just started that priest were thought of as only healers and I was told I was a bad priest.
Well needless to say I was only low level and decided to reroll my priest and named it Badpriestess and every time I was asked to heal and I told them I was shadow with a reply of priests are meant to be healers I would tell them they should have taken notice of my name.
Not as interesting as some of the others but still thats my priest's story. My Paladin Unsun is named after the Band of the same name.
I like it
Boann — Mon, 04/19/2010 - 17:38I really like your story. Although I've always had other thoughts when I hear your toon name. Bad as in notty. ;-D hehe

Sargus — Sun, 04/18/2010 - 14:03My name sargus comes from the comany that made my backpack, Targus. Switched the T for the S!
@.@
Boann — Sun, 04/18/2010 - 15:31You must really love that backpack, perhaps too much. <<; >>;
The Name Resqtoaster comes from....
Rescue Toaster — Sun, 04/18/2010 - 13:10To be honest I wanted to spell it: "Rescue Toaster" but WoW isn't designed to allow it. A shame. I picked up the name from watching "Sealab 2021" my favorite cartoon from Adult Swim (back when they used to air awesome shows like this).
The scene is actually here: http://video.adultswim.com/sealab-2021/rescue-toaster.html
After being crushed by a soda machine, having the malfunctioning thing shoot a can into his face and breaking out a tooth, then being stabbed in the face by a scorpion, Captain Murphy encounters the Rescue Toaster. This was so ridiculous that I picked up the name for Battlefield 2 and have kept it for WoW.
It fits.
Boann — Sun, 04/18/2010 - 15:30You are just like that silly little robot. You sort of resemble it too. Odd.
The Name Elapsed
Elapsed — Sat, 04/17/2010 - 22:36A friend of mine 6 years ago and I were just deciding to start a MMO together and level up. I voted for WoW he voted for FFXI, but since he could get FFXI for free (from a co worker somehow) we played that. I tried a few different names and eventually made a Red Mage named Erroneous and he made a toon named Allout. Because he was all out of ideas for toon names (playing diablo 2 for a few years sorta drains your name ideas lol). After finding out that FFXI was SOOOO SLOOOOOW and after he quit playing because of his work schedule I went out one night and got WoW.
I then proceeded to make a toon who was my favorite class in Diablo 2. A paladin I chose Human because Human had the best starting location for leveling from what I was reading. At this point I almost re-used Erroneous, but then I thought no.... that doesn't feel right. So I stole my friend's idea and I chose a name showing I had really run out of ideas. My name generator had Elapsed.... hur hur hur hur. I then realized should I get into PvP at all that it would be a badass thing to say to someone "Your Time Has Elapsed!" ...... I now realize that's an awful thing to say and never ever say it. But there is Elapsed.
I then after some drama quit the game for awhile and gave Elapsed away (to Craeg) and then one day I decided to play again, but I wasn't going to make Craig give up my pally to me again after all the work he put in. So I made a space goat named Relapsed to show that I had fallen off the wagon so to speak on my fight of the wow addiction lol. Now Relapsed is named Collapsed.
and no, I will not make a toon named Prolapse. I have however had one named Furlapsed (druid) and Lapse (warr) and also Gnrogue (gnome rogue) hur hur hur.
Oh and if you're still reading I came up with Craig's alt Rogue name Impel. One day he was complaining that he had a bunch of lame names and missed being Elapsed. So we came up with a ton of ideas and Impel won because it was sorta like Elapsed in the idea that it was also a verb.
LMAO!
Boann — Sun, 04/18/2010 - 15:27I read this a loud to Gares, and we were both laughing and asking 'what the fuck' the entire time. I love how you go about naming WoW toons :-D
Alprazalam is derived from
Alprazalam — Sat, 04/17/2010 - 21:41Alprazalam is derived from the word Alprazolam, which is the generic form of Xanax. I changed the spelling because the "o" makes with word sound horrible to me, but changing it to an "a" made it sound more.... cheery.
The reason I named my mage after an anxiety medication is because games tend to help me deal with stress, anxiety, loathings, etc. from my life. So, in essence my mage really is my Xanax.
I also have a few low lvl alts. None of their names are worth while..... except for my druid. Cataraxia =D
:-D
Boann — Sun, 04/18/2010 - 15:33That is actually really awesome. It makes me want to log on and run ZG with you even. KILL THE INTERNET DRAGONS!

When I visited Gnomeregan
Businessman — Tue, 04/13/2010 - 00:58When I visited Gnomeregan one day, I was met with high regards by High Tinker Mekkatorque as I was fairly noticeble due to being the only one taller than 3ft. That day I could remember the destruction and tremendous heartfilled pain that surrounded the once beautiful Kingdom of Gnomeregan. The mutant troggs came from no where and I could still remember their merciless invasion destroying everything in Gnomeregan. I remember that I was in Tinkers' Court holding the Troggs off the best I could while trying to buy more time for the women gnomes and their children to escape. I fought besides High Tinker Mekkatorque while being surrounded by the troggs, I could remember the horror and blood shed everywhere. The gnomes never had a chance, they were just outnumbered and overwhelmed.
High Tinker Mekkatorque asked me in the middle of the siege on why I was helping them out when I was not part of them. I told them it was because this is serious business! High Tinker Mekkatorque looked at me with fierce eyes, but I knew that he was filled with deep sadness for his people. He said that I was a man who knew about serious business. "BUSINESSMAN!"
To this day that was the name I was refered to from the gnomes of Gnomeregan.
Can't stop laughing
Boann — Tue, 04/13/2010 - 13:17Oh dear sweet monkey Jesus! That is so funny, I'm having issues over here.

My druid Kerilyn means "Dark
Kerilyn — Mon, 04/12/2010 - 11:49My druid Kerilyn means "Dark haired one" fitting since i have dark brown/black hair. though now i can't find the site that quotes this. Most sites i find now just say it means Dark/Dusky. It's an Irish name. I am part scot part irish. My druid name actually used to be Alexzandra which i changed at lvl 70 to attempt to stop a stalker on wow. (long story) Alexzandra for the ties to Alexander the Great. He may have been gay but he fucking conquered a lot of shit.
My shaman, Raynegrey. I like rain, twist on spelling to be Rayne. Grey because I like the color and the idea with grey being the neutral color between black and white. And because Murdergrey just isn't very fitting for a shaman.
Hmm
Shihli — Mon, 04/12/2010 - 13:02"He may have been gay but he fucking conquered a lot of shit."
You say that like being gay means you're somehow less capable of doing things. I don't know if that's what you meant, but it's certainly bad commentary ...
But anyway, homosexuality wasn't just commonplace in ancient Greece - it was expected and encouraged. Sparta in particular encouraged homosexuality amongst its soldiers, because (if memory serves) their belief was that you would fight harder for your lover than you would for your country/city-state.
Also, not to rain on your parade but if your stalker added you to his friends list way back when, then he'd still know your toon's name. If they cause any trouble just report 'em to a GM. There have been many reports in the past of Blizzard actually working with local law enforcement in situations that deem it necessary (e.g. a player threatening suicide).
Yes Shi, but unfortunately I
Kerilyn — Mon, 04/12/2010 - 21:54Yes Shi, but unfortunately I did not know about the added name still being listed. I'd never had that situation before and did not know how it worked but i figured it out shortly after. You're a little late on that one.
I'm not saying I think it's a bad thing if he was or wasn't gay, I just know a lot of people don't think he's that awesome just because he is/isn't gay. Frankly I think conquering all that land is amazing.
You don't change at all, even after you quit wow. I can always count on you :)
You've had a deeply flawed
Shihli — Tue, 04/13/2010 - 00:13You've had a deeply flawed view of who I am to begin with, but there's no changing that either, so I don't bother :)
That said, I haven't met a single person who tried to diminish Alexander the Great's achievements by saying he's gay ...
You haven't been stuck around
Kerilyn — Tue, 04/13/2010 - 05:51You haven't been stuck around a crappy small college campus the past four years. Filled with closed minded hard core religious fanatics. I would say you're lucky.
Shi is correct.
cromi — Mon, 04/12/2010 - 18:38Yes it was. Actually many times Greeks men were not deemed to be in good social standards, unless they had a slave. and a boy servant... Also even if you refer back to Sophocles he mentions this is in Oedipus Rex.
If you don't have any proof a historical or literary figure is gay. Don't make assumptions. The rumors pertain to Abe Lincoln, Shakespeare, and even Ben Franklin. Even though the latter was very loose with woman in France while His wife was away. They construe his eccentricities, such as taking regular baths, sleeping with his windows open, and being naked in awkward moments. As being gay.

Aeolyn — Mon, 04/12/2010 - 10:57Aeolyn is named after a family member that isn't with us anymore. One of the few relatives of mine I actually got along with. I didn't want to copy her name exactly so I replaced the first couple letters with "Ae" as including an A followed by an E is a staple among most of my MMORPG character names over the years.
Aeo was meant to just sort of be a quiet nod to someone close to me. I never imagined the character would become my main. And now here I am!
I really like your main's

Origin of Shihli's toons
Shihli — Sat, 04/10/2010 - 00:49Shihli - Mandarin Chinese for "Lynx", a nickname of sorts of mine from my college buddies.
Drewpy - a nickname/"pet name" that Allikat came up with, for me. And get your mind out of the gutter.
Luchs - German for "Lynx".
Hoshun - Japanese for "guaranteed excellence", not Lynx for once. This was one of the first internet monikers I went by, prior to playing MMO's. I snagged the word from a game that I drowned 200+ hours into, Front Mission 3 for the PS1.
Tuoni - Finnish god of the Underworld.
Deadhli - a play on Shihli, as being a death knight. This toon was originally named Necroshiliac - a MUCH more clever take on the idea of an undead Shihli (thanks Mavandon) - however, a GM apparently didn't think it was appropriate.
