Ewiges — Sun, 10/24/2010 - 13:03I bought it but I'm having a huge problem playing it. For some reason it doesn't grab me like 2-4 did. It feels like something is missing, something is just not right.
Give it a little time, it'll
Shihli — Sun, 10/24/2010 - 23:12Give it a little time, it'll grow on you. You just have to play it with a fresh mindset - you can't approach it like you did Civ2 or Civ4.

Grussles — Mon, 10/25/2010 - 04:57Yeah plus in 2-4 you had a system and you knew the game inside and out...the more familiar you are with the game and as you get used to the tricks so to speak you'll like it more...also about the naval maps I know...I had a scout sail around and pick up all the ruins...I had mech infantry by the year 1300 and I dominated the conflicts I had with the ai...I saw a screenshot of someone who was researching philosophy in the year 600ish ad and he had panzer tanks

I also recently got a cultural victory as the Indians. Only had three cities, too. This victory led me to realize the great strength that city-states can actually offer - that is, if they are militaristic they give you free guys, and in any situation they will go to war against your opponents so long as you've been nice to them.
They made for my "deterrent" so I could easily pursue a cultural victory without investing in a large army.
I have found the City-States
Jayel — Tue, 09/28/2010 - 12:45I have found the City-States to be one of my favorite new things. I've still only completed 1 game so far but I was able to completely dominate a small map with the Romans so I'm going to up the level when I start up my next game.
They're also pretty much
Dragon — Tue, 09/28/2010 - 12:23They're also pretty much required for the Culture gains from the Culture states as well. Did you use the Iroquois or the actual Indians?
Actual Indians. I was
Shihli — Tue, 09/28/2010 - 12:49Actual Indians. I was Gandhi.
The culture gains that the cultured city-states gave me paled compared to the culture from my cities, but it was still nice to have. I also doubted the Indians' civ special (double unhappiness from number of cities, but only half unhappiness from population) ... doubt no longer. I didn't have to build a single happy-generating building to keep my people happy.
I just spent the past five
Shihli — Tue, 09/21/2010 - 14:30I just spent the past five hours playing. It's ... a bit different. Compared to Civ4, where you had to do IMMENSE micromanaging, this game's flow is quite a bit quicker. Workers tend to run out of things to do. Expansion isn't difficult either - *any* land unit can be a naval unit too; however, embarked land units move slowly and can't defend themselves on water.
Attacking cities is entirely different now - instead of having to rampantly fortify units in cities to defend them, cities can defend themselves - even being able to bombard distant units. Fortifying units in cities increase their defensive abilities as well as increase the city's overall defense.
Diplomacy is enhanced quite a bit. More options, more possibilities (including the ability to make secret pacts with other civs), etc.
Lastly, the graphics and such. My system runs the game just fine at its lowest graphics settings, and the game still looks great.
Overall, great game, imo.
Mine should finally be
