Amazing Phenomenon. Amazing Art.

Vulk — Sun, 02/22/2009 - 01:24

Recently I was scanning the inter-webs for a new background, something to do with my interests.  And as I have told many of you, or you have figured out yourself,  I am an avid armature astronomer and have had my avatar on the site as a nebula of some kind.   As I stumbled around looking for a decent wallpaper that dealt with some sort of astronomical phenomenon, which can be surprisingly hard to find, I ran across some work done by Adam Burn that outright astonished me.  It was a tough choice on picking a wallpaper out of his many magnificent works.  I finally settled on this:

Paradise Lost: A simply stunning artist rendering if the violent death of a massive star we know as a supernova.

Paradise LostParadise Lost

He has many more pieces of his work downloadable at: http://phoenix-06.deviantart.com/gallery/  I highly recommend you check them out, they are all amazing!  Also, If you know of anybody who has done similar pieces of art, let me know.  I love this kind of stuff.

Pirate Bay trail

Caronte22 — Wed, 02/18/2009 - 18:29

Day 1-------------------------------------------

• To win the case, the prosecution has to provide proof that copyright infringement has happened, and so plaintiffs gave examples of piracy that they committed using The Pirate Bay.
• The prosecution couldn't get powerpoint started at one point.
• The Pirate Bay isn't technically being charged for infringing copyrights, since they don't host any files. Instead, they're being charged with, ""Assisting in and preparing to committing copyright infringement." They pleaded not guilty.
• The prosecution couldn't tell the difference between megabytes and megabits.
• It isn't believed that The Pirate Bay organizers will have severe penalties brought against them.
• That's the bus the defendants, "Pirate Bay founders Gottfrid Svartholm Warg (aka Anakata), Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi (aka Brokep) and Fredrik Neij (TiAMO)" drove up in.
• Seats in the court are being scalped!

Day 2------------------------------------------------------

Good news, copyright bandits: due to an error by the prosecution in misunderstanding exactly how BitTorrent trackers work, all charges related to "assisting copyright infringement" have been dropped. Halfway there!

The mixup came when the prosecution attempted to tie several .torrent files to the Pirate Bay's tracking servers, which called for Bay co-founder Fredrik Neij to point out that, hey, that's not quite how it works. All of that evidence linking actual torrents to the Pirate Bay has now been thrown out, leaving only the charges related to "assisting in making available" copyrighted works.

The prosecution is shrugging this off, saying that it in fact "simplifies the prosecutor's case by allowing him to focus on the main issue, which is the making available of copyrighted works." Of course the defense is taking quite the opposite stance: On Twitter, the message from Bay honcho Peter Sunde is, appropriately, this: EPIC WINNING LOL.

Day 3--------------------------------------------

After half the charges against Pirate Bay were dropped yesterday, the prosecution has regrouped and presented amended charges. That's when Carl Lundström's lawyer busted out the King Kong defense—and a legend was born.

The action today revolved around several issues:

•IFPI's Peter Danowsky noted that the damages levied against the Pirate Bay are the equivalent of legally obtained licenses to distribute the music world-wide. In the case of artists like the Beatles who do not distribute music online, the damages are 10x the amount of other artists. Danowsky refutes claims that The Pirate Bay does not have any money to pay these damages. Once again, the defense claimed the money isn't there.

•Sony claimed that TPB never removes torrents at the copyright holder's request (even though they have the ability to do so) and they even go so far as to mock the companies for complaining.

•Damages for infringements that occurred before the official launch of the media (as it did with Prison Break) should be calculated as the cost of a special "global preview license."

•The defense called for an acquittal for their clients on all charges.

•The defense claims that the users have control of the content on TBP, not their clients. That's when Carl Lundström's lawyer, Per E Samuelsson laid down the King Kong defense:

"EU directive 2000/31/EG says that he who provides an information service is not responsible for the information that is being transferred. In order to be responsible, the service provider must initiate the transfer. But the admins of The Pirate Bay don't initiate transfers. It's the users that do and they are physically identifiable people. They call themselves names like King Kong," Samuelsson told the court.

"According to legal procedure, the accusations must be against an individual and there must be a close tie between the perpetrators of a crime and those who are assisting. This tie has not been shown. The prosecutor must show that Carl Lundström personally has interacted with the user King Kong, who may very well be found in the jungles of Cambodia," the lawyer added.

PoliSci for dummies =)

Olorien — Wed, 02/18/2009 - 14:01

DEMOCRAT
You have two cows.
Your neighbor has none.
You feel guilty for being successful.

You push for higher taxes so the government can provide cows for everyone.

REPUBLICAN

You have two cows.

Your neighbor has none.

So?

SOCIALIST

You have two cows.

The government takes one and gives it to your neighbor.

You form a cooperative to tell him how to manage his cow.

COMMUNIST

You have two cows.

The government seizes both and provides you with milk.

You wait in line for hours to get it.

It is expensive and sour.

CAPITALISM, AMERICAN STYLE

You have two cows.

You sell one, buy a bull, and build a herd of cows.

BUREAUCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE

You have two cows.

Under the new farm program the government pays you to shoot one, milk the other, and then pours the milk down the drain.

AMERICAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.

You sell one, lease it back to yourself and do an IPO on the 2nd one.

You force the two cows to produce the milk of four cows. You are surprised when one cow drops dead. You spin an announcement to the analysts stating you have downsized and are reducing expenses.

Your stock goes up.

FRENCH CORPORATION

You have two cows.

You go on strike because you want three cows.

You go to lunch and drink wine..

JAPANESE CORPORATION

You have two cows.

You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk.

They learn to travel.

Most are at the top of their class at cow school.

GERMAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.

You engineer them so they are all blond, drink lots of beer, give excellent quality milk, and run a hundred miles an hour.

Unfortunately they also demand 13 weeks of vacation per year.

ITALIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows but you don't know where they are.

You break for lunch.

Life is good.

RUSSIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.

You have some vodka.

You count them and learn you have five cows.

You have some more vodka.

You count them again and learn you have 42 cows.

The Mafia shows up and takes over however many cows you really have..

TALIBAN CORPORATION

You have all the cows in Afghanistan , which are two.

You don't milk them because you cannot touch any creature's private parts.

You get a $40 million grant from the US government to find alternatives to milk production but use the money to buy weapons.

IRAQI CORPORATION

You have two cows.

They go into hiding.

They send radio tapes of their mooing.

POLISH CORPORATION

You have two bulls.

Employees are regularly maimed and killed attempting to milk them.

BELGIAN CORPORATION

You have one cow.

The cow is schizophrenic.

Sometimes the cow thinks he's French, other times he's Flemish.

The Flemish cow won't share with the French cow.

The French cow wants control of the Flemish cow's milk.

The cow asks permission to be cut in half.

The cow dies happy.

FLORIDA CORPORATION

You have a black cow and a brown cow.

Everyone votes for the best looking one.

Some of the people who actually like the brown one best accidentally vote for the black one.

Some people vote for both.

Some people vote for neither.

Some people can't figure out how to vote at all.

Finally, a bunch of guys from out-of-state tell you which one you think is the best-looking cow.

CALIFORNIA CORPORATION

You have millions of cows.

They make real California cheese.

Only five speak English.

Most are illegal.

Arnold likes the ones with the big udders.
