New Guild Hunter, want to be prepared to Raid
Omnisiah — Sun, 02/28/2010 - 12:59
Hi All, Im still going to focus on Leveling my Death Knight, but I like Downfall alot so Ive made the decision to transfer my 80 Hunter over. Ive had this character for years, he just dinged 80 a couple of months ago though, Ive been a very solo gamer for a long time, right up until the Random Dungeon patch.
He is a little weak on the gear side of things, but I want to get him Raid Ready. Tips and Suggestions?
Here is what he is like now, assuming everything stays intact during Transfer:

if the link doesnt work then the transfer may be in process or complete to the new server.
Thanks all!

Update
Omnisiah — Thu, 03/18/2010 - 15:16Ok, I've updated my stuff with gems and enchants. I've got a couple of holes. My boots esspecially need replacing and I've been keeping my eyes open.
I'm mostly working on getting he tier 9 stuff at the moment. Further set upgrades will probably require raiding I imagine.
Elitist jerks has had a lot of good info and I've gotten a lot from the Hunters Union website as well.
I have a ways left to go, but I feel like I've already made some good solid strides. If anyone has a chance, a re-assessment of my kit and some further tweaking suggestions?
Thanks

Take this guide and do exactly the opposite of what it tells you. Ever run pugs and you will realize what I mean.
I'll look it over a bit
Derchlon — Sun, 02/28/2010 - 16:32I'll look it over a bit later.
Okay, there is A LOT that
Derchlon — Thu, 03/04/2010 - 17:40Okay, there is A LOT that needs to be fixed before we can get that hunter in any kind of raiding status. From your stats and lack of enchants and gems, it would take three of you to compare with just one Luminaire or Grasen.
First of all, Spell power boots? You would be better off buying a level 80 green off the auctionhouse. I'm not joking either. Just because it's purple doesn't make it good.
Buy the emblem neck piece, it's only 19 conquest: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=45820
Basically, look to emblems to fill out your necessary pieces. I'd probably start looking at T10 stuff to replace your shoulders though. That would be the biggest upgrade I could see besides those aweful boots.
Talent tree:
Take all of the points out of Hunter's Mark 0/3
Take all of your points out of Efficiency 0/5
Take all of your points out of Imp aspect of the monkey 0/3
Take a point out of Aspect Mastery 0/1
Put full points in improved stings 3/3
Put full points in Wild Quiver 3/3
Put full points in Rapid Killing 2/2
Put at least 1 point in Rapid recuperation 1/2
Put at least 2 points in Improved Steady Shot 2/3
Put one point in Go for the Throat 1/2
Those talent changes alone will net you about 630 extra dps.
however, you'd be better off with a basic SV build. SV will beat your Marksmanship numbers by about 100 dps.
And put some gems in your gear. Even the crappy ones are better than nothing.
A decent bow upgrade can be
Derchlon — Thu, 03/04/2010 - 17:43A decent bow upgrade can be found in heroic Pit of Saron if you can get a group together to run through it.

Yeah, I know my gear is a big
Omnisiah — Thu, 03/04/2010 - 20:13Yeah, I know my gear is a big one, I need some massive upgrades. Ive been playing since Beta, but Ive never done end game content, I didnt hit 60 for the first time until after WotLK was out.
Ive never done enchants or worried about sockets before. What should my Focus be on for stats? Agility? am I going for Crit rating?
Also, where do I get all of this stuff? just vendors and Auction House?
Rule of thumb for hunter
Derchlon — Fri, 03/05/2010 - 00:42Rule of thumb for hunter gems:
Red socket: Straight agility. In certain situations you are allowed to gem for armor penetration, but that requires better knowledge of the class than what you have currently.
Yellow Socket: Hit rating if not capped. If you are capped and the socket is worth taking, put agility/crit in there. If the bonus is not worth taking, just put straight agility like a red socket.
Blue Socket: Put a +10 stats gem in the blue socket that has the best bonus. Put straight agility in the rest of them, just like a red socket.
When Cataclysm hits, gemming will be much more fun for hunters. Hit rating is probably moving to the blue designation, so we'll start seeing more frequent blue socket claiming.
Agi gems are your focus,
Grasen — Thu, 03/04/2010 - 21:40Agi gems are your focus, unless you need hit. dont be afraid to gem hit to reach cap. Can you tell me what hunter hit cap is? (literal question, please answer) your meta gem should be a relentless earthseige diamond.
After that put a +10 all stats gem in your gloves. gem hit in yellows untill you hit cap. everything else agi gems.
dont forgit a belt buckle and 40 crit scope.
Well, thats not something I
Omnisiah — Thu, 03/04/2010 - 22:13Well, thats not something I would have needed to know before now, but I really want to turn my full attention towards in game content, almost nice feeling like a noob again lol.
But I did look it up, Im not sure if its up to date, it said 8% a rating of 263.
Its seems like the equipment I can get from the 5 man dungeons are only so good, but still pale vastly in comparison with the 10-25 man raids. Other than Enchanting/Gemming everything Ive got, how will I know when Im ready? is there some way to gauge this? Do we have a noob raiding group? I obviously dont meet all of the guild requirements, I was kind of grandfathered in because Ive known garreth since middle school, but I really do what to get up to the level of play that the guild plays on.
As garreth said, heroics are
Grasen — Fri, 03/05/2010 - 00:02As garreth said, heroics are your friends. Also sign up for raid: mALT which runs on sundays. that raid would be perfect for you.
your correct on the hit rateing. in raid consider it 230 though as you will most always have a draneye in your group and their 1% hit aura. so gem and chat and gear for a 230 hit rateing. your close. (looking it up was exactally what i was pushing you to do there) If you do want to run malt though have what you do have chanted and gemmed.
Show up with your flasks of
Grasen — Fri, 03/05/2010 - 00:03Show up with your flasks of endless rage as well as your own buff food (blackened dragonfin) speed pots as well. come prepared to raid (yes i know theres feasts but the agi food is better for a hunter)
so the Flask of Endless Rage
Omnisiah — Fri, 03/05/2010 - 00:45so the Flask of Endless Rage is 25 g on the auction house, is it more common for guildies to make it? I dont know about the Blackened Dragonfin though, nothing was on the AH for it.
what is Speed Pots?
Now, Ive got my Gems done, just waiting to find someone to cut a couple for me. But there are tons of Enchants to choose from. Someone mentioned not to buy them on the AH too, should I just be snagging the mats for them and then find someone to create the enchants?
I can look over all of them on WoWWiki, but am I still focusing on Agility? or am I moving on to Crit? Is there anything special I should be looking at for enchants?
if you wanna buy mats and
Grasen — Fri, 03/05/2010 - 01:18if you wanna buy mats and have guildies make em thats fine, come with more than 1. 25 g aint a bad price though.
keep an eye out for dragonfin on ah.
speed pots increase haste.
Run heroics until your eyes
garreth — Thu, 03/04/2010 - 22:35Run heroics until your eyes bleed. Start there.
Sounds good man, I do need to
Omnisiah — Thu, 03/04/2010 - 23:01Sounds good man, I do need to figure out more about Enchants though.
AH will have this stuff.
Grasen — Thu, 03/04/2010 - 21:41AH will have this stuff. also buy uncut gems it;s cheeper and guildies can cut for you. if you can come up with mats for anything you want, someone in guild can craft it.
Thanks! It transfered to the
Omnisiah — Sun, 02/28/2010 - 16:42Thanks! It transfered to the server pretty quick, but at the moment its not searchable on The Armoury
Advice can vary depending on
Aeolyn — Sun, 02/28/2010 - 17:06Advice can vary depending on which spec you intend to play. Getting a good entry level raid weapon is as simple as spamming H PoS. Beyond that, hit the two piece bonus on tier 9 and 10. Don't use Frost badges on the DPS trinket. It isn't as good in practice as the spreadsheet makes it out to be. Don't invest points in Focused Aim unless you absolutely have to.
Get a wolf (if you don't have one already) and spec it like mine. Glyph yourself correctly for your spec. Bind Kill Command to your shots.
I'd suggest Surv spec for a fresh 80. There are a lot of variable talents to take or not take depending on gear so don't just copy another Hunter's spec (i.e. my Surv spec would force an entry level Hunter into going oom constantly).
Here is a link to the spec Im
Omnisiah — Tue, 03/02/2010 - 22:00Here is a link to the spec Im trying out, feel free to point out what I did wrong and how to correct it lol

I don't know what your hit
Aeolyn — Thu, 03/04/2010 - 16:32I don't know what your hit rating looks like but if it isn't at 8% then you need more. Missing shots is ultra fail so put points in Focused Aim to get to that point now and as you get more gear that has +hit on it you can start stripping Focused Aim down and putting the points elsewhere.
Put a point (NOT TWO POINTS) into Go for the Throat. Put three points in Improved Stings for 30% more Serpent Sting damage. When you're wearing two pieces of tier 9 this becomes especially helpful. Take Wild Quiver. It is literally free damage.
I don't know enough about entry level marks (I honestly feel like it shouldn't be played at entry level) to tell you if you should remove the points from Improved Arcane Shot or not. Improved Steady looks like a much better talent to me.
Efficency is a fail talent. If you want mana restoration use Rapid Recup with Rapid Killing. I'd strip all the points out of Efficency. I'd also strip Improved Hunter's Mark and Improved Aspect of the Monkey.
If you -really- want that Aspect Mastery talent I'd sooner get the health upgrade at the top of the tree rather than the dodge chance. If something is swinging at you in PVE then the situation is so spectacularly bad that evading a hit or two isn't going to matter. The health, though, might someday save you from an AoE.
