This site is ridiculously configurable to each user's tastes. That includes how comments are viewed. You don't have to just stick with what the site is preconfigured to show you.
At the very bottom of the replies to a post, right above the area to post a response, you'll have some drop down boxes.
Try this combination for fun: Threaded List -Expanded, Date - Newest First, 30 comments per page.
Explanation: Now all the new replies to a topic will be right under the original post (no more having to go back many pages of replies). It essentially shows you replies from the bottom UP instead of the top down. Threaded list expanded means that when you directly reply to a post, it shows as indented under the comment that you are replying to. I like 30 comments per page: it's just enough.
Have fun, experiment, give each configuration a shot!
Positive Reinforcement vs Negative Punishment
garreth — Thu, 02/28/2008 - 10:59
I'll keep this short and sweet since I dont' have a lot of time, but I really want to get people's feedback on this.
Last night I was informed of the tactics used by another guild on Gorgonnash regarding Vashj. It wasn't a boss strat per se, but it was definitely raid related: Every time they'd wipe to Vashj, the raid leader would dock their raiders DKP. But not everyone. Only the healers. Ok, I'll let that sink in a bit.
One more time for good measure: If they wipe on Vashj, they dock dkp from only the healers. Oh, and they only bring six healers on this fight. We can all agree this is absolutely absurd. But people are sticking around and actually putting up with it.
This leads to some really interesting discussions of positive reinforcment vs negative punishment. That guild wants to succeed on a diffcult boss. They have 2 options
1) Reward improvements and acknowledge what people did right (positive reinforcement).
2) Punish and take away positive stimulus (dkp) for failure to improve. (negative punishment)
Choosing the second option in a game is almost Hitleresque when applied to the raid as a whole. But to dole it out upon a small and absolutely essential contingent of your team for no other reason than you don't play that role (the raid leaders/officers are all tanks/dps), is downright sick.
And those that sticking around are effectively the raid whipping boys. How do people put up with this? Does a group of people need a scapegoat to their own problems so bad that they'll completely oppressed a subsection of their fellow raiders? Didn't the Nazis do something like this?
dmg meters and aggro
Epatrick — Thu, 02/28/2008 - 03:40
so, I thought I'd share why as destro the RoS fight is easymode. having a felhunter out to eat the runeshield gimps my dmg...a lot, therefore no aggro worries. in phase 1 I spend ten seconds of dps watching the rogues tanking in case they get low and need a SS. phase 3 I'm so badly geared compared to the rest of the casters that I could probably dps without salv and still not worry about aggro. don't know what I'm going to do about my gear/dmg, I almost feel like I'm holding the raid back.
Just a Thought

I find it evermore intriguing to just sit back and analyse the social interaction of the raid and guild - and those in other raids and guilds. The communities have such a large variety of levels of "social norm", in terms of their boundaries and what they classify as "Acceptable".
Particularly on Thaurissan, the environments in the guilds are seemingly apparent to have very ambiguous formats. Simply friends who have joined together - or those who share a common goal, ie. PVE Progression, PvP. The social standards are much lax then Gorgonnash, people accept what people say without taking offense - for the majority.
I think it's highly reflective of the empathy those on the Oceanic Server have for one another - being Australians, Asia etc. They understand the concept of the differing levels of being malevolent and malicious and just joking. I believe its a direct correalation of the social norms we share in Australia. And on Gorgonnash, where the attitude of everything tends to be taken in high offense, pays particular comparison to American Society, which is showed by racial and social uproar.
I don't know if those in The United States need to take a stepback and evaluate what they define as offensive and not - or rather Australia has just losts its values as a whole and don't bother in classifying social norms. Either way, both attitudes, on both servers, by the majority, are respected and transcended through the generations of new gamers.
It'll be interesting to see how Generation Z applies themselves to this social online environment compared to Generation Y - only time will tell.
U.S. Spies Want to Find Terrorists in World of Warcraft

Though the article isn't exactly about the Government sending Night Elf
spies to find Osama Bin Laden's Orc counterpart, it is an interesting article.
From what I could understand is a Congress bill was passed to start learning
more about online communities, how they react, work, etc. Then from that they
can then establish a way to red-flag in-game terrorist plotting. Though, why
waste the money? I can almost be completely sure there are more pedophiles in
MMOs then there are Terrorist. Well, this would explain why no one can find
Osama Bin Laden; he's too busy trying to kill Illidan. "You are not prepared".
Now the core route of this project is interesting. How does a virtual world
differ from a real world (besides to lack of females)? It will be interesting
to see the public results but honestly, I have to conclude this gets an F for
use of government funds.
I Wanna Purge!

So I stepped into a pug WSG today. It so happened to be a Gul'dan premade. Pretty much a lost cause with half the alliance giving up from the start by afk'ing. Oh well, I still stick around the play just to drag out and waste a premade's time. lol
Anyways, more to the point of the story. So they got a druid flag carrier, prob resto, prob well geared. Our side managed to get the flag and I guess hide it for a while. I found him alone and just started whacking on him.
The thing is, I couldn't take him down. With abaolish poisons, I couldn't stack wound on him, and then HoTs basically kept him up. I know I'm not that pvp geared or spec'd, and really don't pvp much, but damn, I must of beat on him for like 2-3 mins solo and couldn't bring him down. lol Wished I could've done something about those damn HoTs!
Well in the end, of course they got the flag back and scored. I checked my recount and actually did almost 90K worth of damage on him! lol
