Rogue
A View to a Kill
Dragon — Mon, 06/09/2008 - 10:11
Well here we go again. I have been meaning to blog about my rogue for awhile and during this lovely econ class I now am.
First of all the title of the blog. Every toon I am I find represents some Bond theme song. For both Dragonspears it was Live and Let Die. For my rogue it is A View to a Kill. Yes I am a nerd and I admit it.
That being said, lets get to the nitty gritty on the various rogue stuff I have gotten so far.
1: Saedo is your friend, pestering him often makes rogue life easier. Or at least picking his brain for knowledge often makes life easier.
2: Mutilate is fun as hell, but damn it sucks in a 2 v 1 situation. Life without cooldowns is tough. Ok and seeing the words "you have to be behind your target to do that."
3: On average you can kill a hordie 3 times before they bring their main out.
4: If its plate you bleed it, for everything else stun it
5: Shadowstep is nice leveling up, but if you wanna solo escort quests Blade Flurry is your friend.
6: Sub>Mutilate>Combat in my personal opinion. However I think my rogues current spec of 11/22/22 has to be the easiest things have gone yet. THat might just be the extra talent points though.
7: Without shadowstep fighting frost mages is just as bad as fighting a frost mage on a warrior. IF the mage knows what they are doing.
8. Class timers makes watching your S&D in instances easy mode.
9: I still don't understand how some rogues can live without Camoflage and Master of Deception.
Eh, thats all for now. Only took 10 minutes. back to focusing on class ><
Project: Rogue Tank

So, just for fun, I'm gonna start working on an avoidance set. It'll be done on my own time, using heroic badges and whatnot, nothing else to spend on now anyways. Maybe pick some stuff off NRP if the opportunity arises. This blog will be my checklist of sorts and calculations thrown in.
The Goal: 101.8% avoidance. Which for a rogue means, Dodge, Parry, and Miss Rate only. Defense is only about 75% as effective due to no ability to block. With avoidance, it'd make 1% Dodge = 1% Parry = 1% Miss Rate = 1% Avoidance.
The Macro:: This would be the in game macro that will help you monitor your avoidance. Doesn't count for Scorpid Sting or Insect Swarm, but you can manually add that in with a +5 +2 in there if you wish.
/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Need 101.8 combined avoidance. Currently at:",0.8,0.8,1)
/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage(GetDodgeChance() + GetBlockChance() + GetParryChance() + 5 + floor(GetCombatRatingBonus(CR_DEFENSE_SKILL)) * 0.04,1,0.5,0)
My Spec: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=f0eboZ0xxZxrxohuRoxsx
Agility: 20 agi = 1% dodge. Assuming Sinister Calling (15% more agi) and Kings (10% more), we essentially get that 1 agi on gear = 1x0.1x0.15) = 1.265 agi on paper. So, 1 agi = 1.265 * (1% / 20) Dodge = 0.06325% Avoidance.
Dodge Rating: 18.92307854 = 1% dodge. So, 1 dodge rating = 1% / 18.92307854 = 0.052845523% Avoidance
Defense Rating: 2.365385056 = 1 Defense = 0.04% Dodge + 0.04% Parry + 0.04% Miss Rate = 0.12% Avoidance. So 1 defense rating = 0.12% / 2.365385056 = 0.050731697% Avoidance
Parry Rating: 23.65384674 = 1% parry. So, 1 parry rating = 1% / 23.65384674 = 0.042276421% Avoidance.
Rogues are Easy

Heh so I was on vent that night but I ain't as quick witted to respond. lol But this topic's been on the back of my mind so I'll just blurt stuff out here.
Rogues are easy. Easiest dps class imo, which is part of the reason why rogues can top damage most of the time. Most only really have to pay attention to 3-5 timers, 3-5 buttons to mash. And I've raided in every raid spec there is cept for maces. Don't have to care about mana, cast times, swing timers, rage starvation, shot clipping, pets, buffing, other ppl's health bars, etc. In the most dire of situations where ppl are out of "gas", rogues can still dps (barring the get the fuck out of there situations). We are an unlimited source of dps.
But getting the most dps out of a rogue is another matter. Why are the top dps rogues in top guilds? Why can bad healers stick with top guilds? Because of natural selection. There's a fuck ton of rogues out there. If you can't strive to the top, then look, there's another one right around the corner. Bad healer? Replace him? Well typical follow up question, where do you find another? Guilds will tend to work most strats around what healers (and tanks) are capable of, not what dps does.

So I stepped into a pug WSG today. It so happened to be a Gul'dan premade. Pretty much a lost cause with half the alliance giving up from the start by afk'ing. Oh well, I still stick around the play just to drag out and waste a premade's time. lol
Anyways, more to the point of the story. So they got a druid flag carrier, prob resto, prob well geared. Our side managed to get the flag and I guess hide it for a while. I found him alone and just started whacking on him.
The thing is, I couldn't take him down. With abaolish poisons, I couldn't stack wound on him, and then HoTs basically kept him up. I know I'm not that pvp geared or spec'd, and really don't pvp much, but damn, I must of beat on him for like 2-3 mins solo and couldn't bring him down. lol Wished I could've done something about those damn HoTs!
Well in the end, of course they got the flag back and scored. I checked my recount and actually did almost 90K worth of damage on him! lol
Chapter 0 - What to Start With
saedo — Wed, 02/13/2008 - 02:09
Well by the time anyone serious reads this, it's probably too late. But I'd like to make a few notes on the racials and their effects on PvE. They're all not that far off from each other (in order of 10-20 dps), but for the min-maxer, there are some points to consider. So in order, what I think would make the best PvE rogues.
The Top 3
Orc - Blood Fury, increases attack power by X but reduces healing effects by 50% for 15 sec, 2 min CD. Attack Power scales with level with the formula 2 + lvl*4, so at level 70, it's 282 AP. This I feel overall gives the best reliable dps boost. It's basically a free trinket type ability that you can coordinate to burst damage with your other CDs.
Human - 5 Expertise with Swords and Maces. With Sword spec currently being the best PvE spec, this talent effectively gives you 1.25% more hit. In a raid buffed tank and spank scenario, this talent can provide the most dps.
Troll - Increases attack speed by 10%, 20%, or 30% for 15 sec depending on current hp, lower hp gives more speed, costs 10 energy, 3 minute CD. Now potentially, this can be the best racial, but to get full use out of it reliably is another matter. You'd have to take enough damage and pop it then, but you may get healed before that happens. You'd need a Patchwerk-type fight to truly maximize this. Most of the time, it is just popped whenever it's off CD.
The Next 2
Blood Elf - Arcane Torrent, gives you 30 energy back, 2 min CD. It's decent, nothing huge, basically an extra attack out of it.
Night Elf - No particular racial, but Night Elves have the highest base agility out of all the rogues. Only a few more for that extra stat of dps.

TBC Raiding Rogue Guide
saedo — Tue, 02/12/2008 - 11:05
This is my guide for the raiding rogue, or those aspiring to be one. It covers everything you'd need to know about specs, gearing, and the dps itself. Hope you find this useful. Feel free to suggest things to add or ask questions. Enjoy.
My sources will be from various people and posts at Elitist Jerks, WoWWiki, and WoW Forums. Pretty much in that order of importance.
Definitions
SnD - Slice and Dice
Cycle - The order in which you use up your combo points. Often, notation will look like 1s/5r or 5s/5r basically Xs/Yr. What that denotes is to use finisher "s" after X amount of combo points, then finisher "r" after Y amount of combo points, then repeat. In our cases, "s" will be Slice and Dice, "r" will be Rupture, "e" will be Eviserate. Also, an additional notation sometimes is "Xs/Yr cut". What "cut" means is to start the cycle again immediately refreshing SnD even if there is a lot of time left on it. Those type of cycles tend to tell you that your energy will start to cap before SnD wears off and it's not worth using other finishers, so it's better to just refresh SnD beforehand.
Energy Capping - Energy comes at 20 sec per tick (normally) regardless of what you do and caps at 100 (normally). When energy is capped out at 100, additional energy ticks do nothing and are thus wasted.
7 Commandments of Rogue DPS
First off, here's a great set of rules Aldriana at EJ posted for rogues. If nothing else, follow these to maximize your dps.
