01 - Flame Leviathan Strategy Guide

saedo's picture

saedo — Fri, 04/03/2009 - 13:15

Health:

  • Normal:  15,550,000
  • Heroic:  62,766,000

Abilities:

  • Flame Jets:  Inflicts 3000 Fire damage each second to enemies around the caster. Lasts 10 seconds. 50 yd range (interruptable)
  • Battering Ram:  Rams the target, dealing damage and knocking it forward. Deals 100% Weapon damage and causes the target to take 50% more damage for 20 seconds.
  • Gathering Speed:  Rams the target, dealing damage and knocking it forward. Deals 100% Weapon damage and causes the target to take 50% more damage for 20 seconds.
  • Missile Barrage: All machines and players not in one will take 700 damage every 1-2 seconds.
  • Turrets:  The Flame Leviathan has 4 turrets. Passengers in the demolisher can be launched at him where they can destroy the turrets and then hit the Overload Circuit: stuns Flame Leviathan and causes him to take 50% more damage for 10 seconds.

Vehicles:

  • The health points and attacks of your vehicle depends on the ilvl of your gear.
  • Shirt, tabard, offhand, and ranged/relic slots do not affect vehicle scaling.
  • Take the average ilvl of your gear (subtract 13 for each blue, 26 for each green) and dividing by 15 (total number of applicable slots), then subtracting 170 will give you the percent increase of the health points of your vehicle compared to base - it cannot be decreased though (naked is a 0% increase).

Salvaged Siege Engine:

  • "Tanks/Kiters" of the encounter
  • 1 driver + 1 turret controller + 2 passengers
  • Ram:  Rams any enemies in front of the demolisher, dealing 22501 to 27501 Damage and knocking them back. Also deals 2850 to 3150 siege damage to buildings. 40 Energy.
  • Electoshock:  Shocks all targets within a 25 yard cone in front of the caster. It also interrupts spellcasting and prevents any spell in that school from being cast for 4 sec. 20 Energy, Instant cast, 10 sec cooldown
  • Steam Rush:  Put the steam engine into overdrive for a short duration, rushing forward, dealing siege damage and knocking back enemies. 40 Energy, 70 yd range, Instant, 15 sec cooldown (Do not steam rush on ramps, you will fall through the world atm)

Passenger Abilities:

  • Anti-Air Rockets:  Fires an explosive missile directly forward, detonating when it has travelled 100 yards, hitting any enemies within 10 yards. 0.25 sec cooldown
  • Fire Cannon:  Fires a cannon blast. 20 Energy, 10-70 yd range, Instant
  • Shield Generator:  Activates the shield generator on the Siege Engine, absorbing a limited amount of Physical, Fire, Frost and Arcane damage taken for 5 sec. 1 min cooldown

Salavaged Demolisher:

  • Slow ranged dps
  • 1 driver + 2 passenger, passengers help grab ammo from the ground and can be launched onto the Flame Leviathan
  • Hurl Boulder:  Hurls a massive boulder into the distance, dealing 27000 to 33000 damage to enemies within 8 yards of the explosion. 10-70 yd range
  • Hurl Pyrite Barrel:  Hurls an orb of blue pyrite into the distance, dealing damage, but consumes ammo. 10-70 yd range
  • Ram:  Rams any enemies in front of the demolisher, dealing 19000 to 21000 Damage and knocking them back. Also deals 2160 to 2640 siege damage to buildings. 4 sec cooldown
  • Launch Passenger:  Launches the Demolisher's passenger into the air

Passenger Abilities:

  • Mortar:  Fires a miniature explosive blast, dealing Fire damage to all enemies in the target area. 1 sec cooldown
  • Anti-Air Rocket:  Fires an explosive missile directly forward, detonating when it has travelled 90 yards, hitting any enemies within 10 yards.
  • Grab Crate:  Use your hook and chain to grab the targetted crate.
  • Increased Speed:  Injects liquid pyrite into the engines, increasing movement speed by 100%. Lasts 20 sec.
  • Load into Catapult:  Load yourself into the catapult arm, using yourself as ammunition. 30 sec cooldown

Salvaged Chopper:

  • Speedy support type vehicle, "debuffs" and heals passengers
  • 1 driver + 1 passenger
  • Speed Boost:  Fires the fuel injectors on the bike, increasing its speed by 100% for 5 sec.
  • Sonic Horn:  Sends a wave of force in front of the motorcycle, causing 6300 to 7700 damage to all enemy targets within 35 yards in a frontal cone.
  • Tar:  Drops a pool of tar for 45 sec that slows the movement speed of enemies within 10 yards. Tar can be ignited. Lasts for 45 sec. 15 sec cooldown
  • First Aid Kit:  Heals your passenger fully over 4 sec. 1 min cooldown

Encounter:

Gauntlet:

The encounter is activated by talking to the npcs, though the mobs won't aggro til we move out.     Trash is easy, should be able to aoe everything down with the vehicles.   Iron Colossus' Ground Slam should be avoided or interrupted by the Seige Engines.

Towers should be destroyed along the way if Hard Mode is not the goal.   No need to clear everything though, they should not add during the boss.

If Brann is the one to activate it, the towers are automatically off, so can go straight to ez mode.

We can repair at the end of the Gauntlet, do so if not going for that achievement, and stock up on all the pyrite (ammo) you can before the last packs of the boss.

Boss:

Every vehicle must stay out of melee range of Flame Leviathan.

Seige Engines:    Flame Leviathan will immediately target somone close to him, the best option is the Seige Engine so make sure they're closest.  The goal is to kite him around, coordinate a path for the raid to follow.   The trick is that Flame Leviathan will get faster as the fight goes on, a system shutdown will reset his speed.    Also use its Electroshock to interrupt flame wave

Demolishers:  Besides being the ranged dps and tar igniter, this one can also launch passengers onto Flame Leviathan to take out its Turrets.   This might not be needed at all in easy mode.

Coordinate a dps and a healer to be launched simultaneously to take them out.    Also coordinate  choppers to pick them up quickly and take them to safety (or demonlisher to be launched again).

Note:  A healer is not necessary on 10 man.  It appears Flame Leviathan only shoots you to death on the 25 man.

In 10 man, 2 turrets (4 in 25 man) must be destroyed before a System Shutdown occurs.   This stuns Flame Leviathan and launches the people on him off of it, parachute style.  This is when they need to be picked up, look to the sky.

Note:  Turrets instantly respawn after the Shutdown is over, so passengers can be launched yet again.   Only issue is that means Demolishers are without turret passengers to help dps or pick up pyrite.

Choppers:   They will be used to shit tar all in front of Flame Leviathan.  It'll slow him down and it can be ignited by Demolishers for more damage.    They will also be used to pick up stranded people and take em to where they need to go.

Hard Mode:

To access hard mode, along the way before Flame Leviathan, we don't destroy the towers.  Here's what each tower does:

  • Thorim's Hammer (purple, back left):  Deals Stormstrike damage to all enemies nearby. Additional damage is taken if directly under the impact location.   Flame Leviathan gains 25% more HP and does 25% more Physical damage.
  • Mimiron's Inferno (red, front left):  Deals 150000 Fire damage to all nearby enemies and leaves a flaming blaze behind.  Flame Leviathan gains 25% more HP and does 50% more Fire damage.
  • Hodir's Fury (blue, back right):  Deals 150000 Frost damage to all nearby enemies, entombing them in ice.  (only freeable via tar fire)  Flame Leviathan gains 25% more HP and slows vehicle movement by 20%
  • Freya's Ward (green, front right):  Deals 13500 to 16500 Natures damage to all nearby enemies and summons guardians of nature to surround the enemy.  Flame Leviathan gains 25% more HP and decreases his fire damage taken by 10%.

In 10 mans, we made a slight adjustment to the above strat for hard(er) modes.    We send 1 ranged dps up, to handle both turrets, non hunters.   Also, one of the choppers is abandoned at the beginning to ride with the launcher Demolisher, that way both Demolishers will always have passengers, doing the Pyrite thing and dps.

Achievements:

Dwarfegeddon:  Destroy 100/200 Steelforged Defenders in 10 seconds on the Ulduar gauntlet on Normal/Heroic Difficulty.

What we did was just make a b-line towards the repair pads.   Avoid killing towers, take out the big buys mainly, which does splash down the small guys.   But anyways, clearing the path of any major threat, then use the repairs.    Then we went back towards the front pulling along all the small guys we can find, when we saw enough, on cue, blow em up.   Easy shit.

Unbroken:  Defeat Flame Leviathan on the first try without anyone repairing their vehicle on Normal/Heroic Difficulty.

Likely easiest on Easy Mode of course.   Just don't repair don't wipe.    Though, I could see this being "easy" on Hard Mode too, since we'd skip the towers, skipping chunks of trash, our vehicles should be less damaged.    Though that means only after we have Hard Mode on farm to kill it the first try.

Three Car Garage:  Defeat Flame Leviathan while in each of the following vehicles on Normal/Heroic Difficulty.

Personal achievement, just ride something different each week.   It only counts if you're in the vehicle upon Flame Leviathan's death.   Not dead, not on the turret, not anywhere else.

Take Out Those Turrets:  Destroy a Flame Leviathan Defense Turret on Normal/Heroic Difficulty.

Personal achievement, the new Denyin the Scion.   So guess after farm mode starts up we'd have to launch specific people.   (after we learned to launch people ;p)

Shutout:  Defeat Flame Leviathan without causing a System Shutdown on Normal/Heroic Difficulty.

Well we stumbled upon this in our zerg the boss fashion.  lol   Probably only possible on Easy Mode for now.    Simply, don't launch anyone, zerg away.

Orbital Bombardment:  Defeat Flame Leviathan with 1 Orbital Defense System active on Normal/Heroic Difficulty.

We chose Thorim's tower to leave up (purple).    It's quite simple really, avoid the big blue beams coming from the sky.   We liberally launched 2 dps on to the Turrets everytime to cause the System Shutdown as much as possible.  This mode currently makes him drop 2 [Emblem of Conquest] instead of 1 emblem in either mode.

Orbital Devastation:  Defeat Flame Leviathan with 2 Orbital Defense Systems active on Normal/Heroic Difficulty.

We chose to leave Mimiron's tower along with Thorim.   Mimiron leaves a big red moving laser and leaves a pile of fire (like Ignis scorch) that you don't want to stand in.   The trick is that the moving laser can cut you off while kiting and stuff around the room.    But if you can stay away and a little luck, this isn't so bad.   This mode drops a [Runed Orb] in addition to the above.    In 25 man, an extra stack of 2 orbs are dropped.

Nuked From Orbit:  Defeat Flame Leviathan with 3 Orbital Defense Systems active on Normal/Heroic Difficulty.

Hodir is a next possibility, he ice blocks people which can be melted by fire attacks (pyrite, flame jets, chopper tar fire, Mimiron's laser).    The beams are pretty fast moving light blue beams that follow people.    It's dangerous when it stops, then a few seconds later you get entombed in ice.    Avoid that at all costs, you take heavy damage and require quick fire attention to release you, so it'd likely hurt your vehicle way badly.     Make use of quick manuevering and Steam Rush to avoid those.

Orbit-uary:  Defeat Flame Leviathan with 4 Orbital Defense Systems active on NormalHeroic Difficulty.

Freya is likely next hardest to deal with.   Her beam will be at the 4 corners and spawn adds that the Demolishers should be able to take care of.    It's an added complication to constantly shift dps from FL to adds, to stocking pyrite.

Siege Experience

saedo — Thu, 06/18/2009 - 01:33

For the past few weeks or so I've exclusively used a Siege Engine in both 10 and 25 man version.   I thought I'd share my insight on this.

First off, I try to get closer and further north than the demolishers when we start.   This could've been totally random fluke, but in the 10 man, Nuit had a streak of being persued first when he positioned himself about midway in before us.    When I got in further than him, I got it, or Mori got it.     Like I said, could be random luck, just hope it chases a Siege to make things easier.

Persued:

If he does target you, he shouldn't be close enough yet, so you got time to make a 360 and just head in the other direction.   Likely heading to a corner, or wall, I would save Steam Rush for that moment.   He starts slow and builds up speed, so don't panic.    Head as far as you can, make the turn and Steam Rush to keep distance.

There are 3 situations I'd use Steam Rush while being Pursued:

  1. If I forget the timer and was right on his ass as he turned around on me (avoid this situation), so I'd have to make a quick turn and steam rush away.   Likely be hit already so it was costly.
  2. If I'm heading to a far wall with nothing in the way, straight rush just to get a distance.    Cause by the time you actually reach that wall, the CD should be ready again
  3. Turning corners, turn it, use it.

Avoiding beams is relatively easy during this.   You should always be moving so Hodir won't affect you.   If you see fire, don't try to cross it or "beat the beam" where you'd wind up on the other side of the fire.    Treat the wall of fire as an actual wall.   You turn and follow along parallel to it, never cross it's path (even if the beam is far away and merely heading towards you).     By putting yourself to the otherside, you essentially cut off FL from the rest of the raid, unless they dared to follow you and that'd be just getting massive damage.

Not Persued:

I tend to hang slightly back and ram FL from behind.    But, it costs 40 steam pressure, while Electro Shock for interrupts cost 38 steam pressure.   So should only ram if you're at 78 steam pressure, never spam it so you'd always have an interrupt ready for Flame Jets.

Mimiron's beam is the first beam I take notice of.   It travels on a clockwise diagonal pattern, essentially cutting off the perimeters, well parts of it while scorches are up.    In your head, you can always keep track of where the beam potentially is.    If it's outside your field of vision, look for trails of fire, that means the beam was recently there.   If you don't even see fire, it means the beam is long gone and likely behind you.     What you want to do is always stay to the side opposite of the beam/fire, that way you'd never get trapped between FL and the fire.   Your kite path will be on the side the fire is not at.

Hodir's beam is next pesky thing to note.   Several of them and moves faster than you, but the only danger is when it stops.   Constantly moving works, stay the fuck away everytime they're near.   And they're often not even chasing you but someone beside you.    Some quick manuevering and turns will ensure that you'd never be touched.   Steam Rush is used in those oh shit moments.  This is the beam that would usually cause me to be out of position and slower to interrupt.    But hey, better some smaller Flame Vent damage to everyone than a dead Seige Tank imo      Flame Vents are usually a small part of damage compared to big hits from the beams and FL themselves.

Thorim's beam is next on my mind, .these purple beams are stationary, but sometimes they kinda spawn close and fast and multiple beams around you.   That is a steam rush situation to high tail out of there.    This occasionaly forces me out of position due to that.

Freya's beams / adds, are mostly ignored.    Well, some situations where I can Steam Rush through them, or get them between me and FL, ram em.     But for the most part, let the gunners kill them.

Anyways, while avoiding all those beams, when the Pursued timer ticks down, I back off slightly.   Making sure I have room for a getaway.    And sometimes, the Flame Vents as he changes targets and can manage to get an interrupt off, then turn around and steam rush away.     But anyways, priority is get distance if needed while avoiding beams, repeat.

"Lava Crab" Nuked from Orbit Strategy

Shihli — Fri, 06/12/2009 - 02:53

Alright, so here's what we did tonite after about an hour and a half's worth of tries.  We eventually got Flame Leviathan killed, but only just barely.

Siege Engine #1 - 2 players (driver, passenger)

Siege Engine #2 - 2 players (driver, passenger)

Demolisher #1 - 3 players (driver, passenger, and "launcher")

Demolisher #2 - 2 players (driver, passenger)

Chopper - 1 player (driver)

Strategy:

Demolishers generally stick to the corners/sides of the room.  The demolisher with 2 passengers cycles them - one passenger gets launched each "rotation" onto Flame Leviathan to deal with the turrets, to force a System Overload.

The drivers in the Demolishers, by and large, have two (maybe three) responsibilities in this fight:

1)  Keep a rolling stack of 10 Pyrite debuffs on Flame Leviathan as often as you can.  Ideally you'd have 100% uptime.  However, if Flame Leviathan chases you, obviously you can't keep the DoT rolling.

2)  Stay away from Flame Leviathan as much as possible.  Keep as much distance as you can between him and you.  Also, avoid getting hit by the various beam effects.

3)  Help kill Freya's tower's adds (the flowers) when necessary and convenient, either with Cannon shots or with your siege attack (close-range).

4)  ONLY IF YOU ARE THE MULTI-PASSENGER DEMOLISHER - *NEVER* miss Flame Leviathan when launching the turret killer.

The passengers in the Demolishers have a lot of things to pay attention to:

1)  MOST IMPORTANT - keep your Demolisher fully stocked with Pyrite.  This will be used to deal most of the damage to Flame Leviathan, as well as used to speed up your demolisher in the event you are chased.

2)  Help kill Freya's tower's adds (the flowers) as fast as possible.  Generally, the rocket attacks are best as they are very fast and the mobs don't have a ton of health.  The cannon also works well.

3)  Break people out of the ice blocks in the event they get frozen.

4)  ONLY IF YOU ARE ON THE MULTI-PASSENGER DEMOLISHER - kill the turrets super-fast.  The more System Overload time you have, the faster he will die, and the less damage Flame Leviathan will do.

5)  ONLY IF YOU ARE ON THE MULTI-PASSENGER DEMOLISHER - get back to your demolisher ASAP after jumping off Flame Leviathan.

Siege Engine drivers have a few things to focus on as well:

1)  Try to keep Flame Leviathan chasing you as often as possible.  We're not sure what the "chase" mechanic is, or how it works - but do what you can to make him follow you.

2)  INTERRUPT FLAME VENTS.  THIS IS IMPORTANT.  The vents hits stupidly hard.

3)  Avoid beams.

4)  Help kill adds as often as possible.

Siege Engine passengers also have a lot to do:

1)  Do a lot of the same crap that Demolisher passengers do.

2)  Use the damage shield when Flame Leviathan is chasing you and you're close enough to get hit.

3)  Help kill adds and shoot down pyrite.

4)  Break people out of ice blocks if they get frozen.

Chopper driver has a few scant responsibilities as well:

1)  Keep tar slicks between Flame Leviathan and his chase target as often as possible.

2)  Help pick up and deliver the passengers for the 3-man Demolisher crew.

3)  Help kill Freya tower adds.

saedo's picture

Chase Mechanic:   Everyone

saedo — Fri, 06/12/2009 - 10:15

Chase Mechanic:   Everyone seems to be reporting it's random.   Can be any Seige/Demolisher, just won't do the Choppers until everyone else is dead.

Flame Vents:  There's still an issue sometimes where it just doesn't interrupt.

And I believe the adds can also fuck it up.   Once or twice, I would be targetting FL, adds got in front of me, and when I shot it, the lightning all went to them, and didn't interrupt Flame Vents of course.    I'm going to guess though it's a targetted ability, it won't take range into account if there's something it can already hit between you and FL.

One other thing is sometimes I did let Flame Vents go cause I got turned around avoiding beams/fires.     So would avoiding beams be the priority or interrupting?    Cause well, I did wind up being the last one standing.

How to: Flame Leviathan (10man) with 4 towers

Shihli — Fri, 05/29/2009 - 16:34

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=17367771401&sid=1

Above is the thread detailing it.

Basic setup is this:

Siege Engine #1 - 2 people (one pilot and one passenger)

Siege Engine #2 - 2 people (one pilot and one passenger)

Demolisher #1 - 3 people (one pilot, one passenger, one "launcher" - MUST be ranged dps, cannot be a hunter)

Demolisher #2 - 2 people (one pilot, one passenger)

Bike #1 - 1 person (pilot)

Bike #2 - unused, may be able to pilot it into the playing field to be used in a pinch, but likely will not be needed.

...

Siege engines do what they do best - keep constant dps on Flame Leviathan and do their best to soak up his melee attacks with their shields.  Will also be needed to help ignite the tar.  Siege engine gunners (passengers) need to not only do some dps on the boss, but also shoot down Pyrite almost constantly as well as dps Freya's adds.

The bike will be used to ferry the "launcher" which needs to be thrown onto Flame Leviathan.  Bikes can also be used to gather up Freya Tower's adds to better kill them.  Obviously you need to lay down tar as well.

The demolishers are what the fight hinges on.  ONLY ONE PERSON will ever be launched onto Flame Leviathan.  The Demolishers need to have a passenger on them AT ALL TIMES.  The passengers are responsible for keeping their demolishers loaded up on Pyrite, which the demolishers use to apply a stacking DoT on Flame Leviathan, capable of over 213,000 dps - that's right, two-hundred-thirteen-thousand damage per second.  This is what wins the 4 tower fight for you.

Likewise, the passengers can keep the demolishers moving faster if they are chased by Flame Leviathan, ignite tar, and do limited damage to Freya Tower's adds.

Tried this strategy to good

Shihli — Fri, 06/05/2009 - 01:04

Tried this strategy to good effect in Lava Crab, achieved the 3-tower achievement.

More information for you all:

Here's what we've found about each beam so far.

1)  Mimiron's Beam (red) - follows a mostly pre-determined path, somewhat diamond-shaped path around the room.  Beam simply shows the path that the fires will make.  Wherever the beam goes, fire will spawn there soon.

2)  Hodir's Beam (light blue) - follows a random vehicle.  Is not dangerous at all when moving; when it stops moving, it will do an ice strike about 3-5 seconds after stopping.  If you get hit with the ice strike, you'll take a load of damage, get frozen in place, and take a lot more damage over time.  Don't get hit by this.

3)  Thorim's Beam (dark blue) - randomly spawns about 20-30 seconds into the fight.  3-5 beams spawn at a time.  Each one does significant damage if you're caught underneath it, however, whenever they "pulse" every vehicle regardless of placement takes 1% of its health in damage.

I did the Deomolisher's

Keisjaa — Fri, 06/05/2009 - 07:14

I did the Deomolisher's gunner job last night & after a trial & error attempt it's not to hard to get the hang of

Some notes:

-The Missile can only aim so high so there's a large gap that you can't hit above you(so you can't park right under the pyrite path)

-I did little actual attacking on FL as i was more focused on shooting/gathering pyrite(also got chased twice so i burned a couple of boost charges there too)

-Watch the pyrite barrels & see where they path(also note the you can hit them past the arena wall & they'll drop outside & be wasted)

*i'll add more later as i think of it

Added what we did for Orbital

saedo — Fri, 05/15/2009 - 11:29

Added what we did for Orbital Devastation (2 Towers).

We left Mimiron's Tower (Red) up.   What it does is increases Flame Leviathan's hp by 25% and fire damage by 50%.    So interrupting Flame Jets is doubly important.     Anyways, the other thing is that it does a big red moving laser, can't miss it, and it just moves around the place.    It leaves behind a pile of fire, like Ignis' scorch, massive damage, do not stand in.    The added problem is that it can cut you off while kiting around so good luck!

Reward is a [Runed Orb], which we put in the gbank.

Also added the additional tower effects, each gives Flame Leviathan 25% more HP, and also:

  • Thorim - 25% more physical damage (don't get rammed)
  • Mimiron - 50% more fire damage (interrupt flame jets)
  • Hodir - 20% reduced movement speed for us (likely have to stay much further away at all times)
  • Freya - 10% reduced fire damage for him (less damage, go go higher ilvl gear)

Updated with our experiences

saedo — Fri, 05/01/2009 - 02:26

Updated with our experiences today.

Dwarfaggeddon - Go to repair pad, kill any big guys along way, avoid killing towers, repair, go back to front while gathering small guys, ready, set, nuke.

Orbital Bombardment - Thorim's tower is easiest to leave up, the purple one, back left one.

Turrets

  • They do not shoot back at you in 10 man, unlike 25 man
  • 2 dps can be launched
  • You are stuck at your turret until they're all destroyed, but can range attack others
  • You are only kicked off after all turrets die (2 in 10 man, I believe 4 in 25 then)
  • System Shutdown occurs and bikes should be looking up at the sky as we are being parachuted back onto the ground
  • The Turrets instantly respawn after shutdown is over so you can liberally launch people again

10 man 1 Tower so far drops 2 Conquest instead of Valor.
